"Amigos Originales" - Proyecto de la prisión de mujeres - Muñecas de tela hechas a mano.
Justo en las afueras de Guadalajara, México está la prisión de mujeres (Reclusorio Femenil de Puente Grande) donde cerca de 650 mujeres residentes. El centro de prevención y readaptación (PCFR) se encuentra dentro de un compuesto de cárceles.
La cárcel de mujeres fue construida para albergar aproximadamente a 250 personas, por lo está sobre poblada. Aquí se encuentran condenadas por todo tipo de delitos desde violencia, hasta consumo de drogas relacionadas, con delitos de cuello blanco como el fraude y el lavado de dinero. Las mujeres con problemas de salud mental están aquí, junto con todo tipo detenidas, reclusas sin condena y hasta personas inocentes.
Debido al largo proceso jurídico mexicano, y el sesgo hacia sentencias condenatorias, pasa mucho tiempo antes de que cualquier resultado final se determine, en cualquier caso. Esto representa una terrible carga sobre el individuo que afecta la salud (mental, física y emocional) del preso.
Rebecca Roth conoce muy bien sobre el miedo, la depresión, la ira, desesperanza, y la sensación de impotencia de ser privada de su libertad. Después de su primer año, se dio cuenta de que si no encontraba una manera sana para canalizar todas las emociones negativas sería destruida.
Entonces Rebeca comenzó a darse cuenta del mundo a su alrededor. En esta prisión hay niños nacidos de madres que estaban embarazadas cuando fueron detenidas. Los bebés que nacen ahí pueden permanecer con su madre durante los primeros 3 años de vida. Cuando vivía en el dormitorio C-3, ella convivía un bebé recién nacido, "Lupita", que no tenía juguetes y entonces se le ocurre hacerle una muñeca.
Muñeca que resultó ser el prototipo de los "Amigos Originales" y así nació esta colaboración especial. Se inició la producción en julio de 2008 y se le vendió la primera muñeca al director de la cárcel el 16 de septiembre 2008 . Desde entonces, se han fabricado y vendido más de 135 muñecas, creadas completamente a partir de donaciones y materiales reciclados.
Los materiales utilizados son: telas, cintas, encajes, botones, pinturas, joyas rotas y cualquier material que se pueda usar para la elaboración de las muñecas. Ahora hay un equipo de mujeres trabajando en ellas. Todos los fondos recibidos de la venta de las muñecas se destina a satisfacer sus necesidades personales, mejorar sus habilidades y su autoestima.
Las mujeres participantes mejoran su autoestima, siguiendo la filosofía de esforzarse mas para hacer crear un producto de mejor calidad.
Con el dinero que obtienen de este proyecto, las mujeres son capaces de comprar cosas en el almacén de la cárcel, como el agua purificada, toallas sanitarias, papel higiénico, Clorox, ropa, jabón o incluso alguna golosina en uno de las tres tiendas de abarrotes en Puente Grande.

“Original Friends” - Women's Prison Project - Handmade Cloth Dolls
Just outside of Guadalajara, Mexico is a woman’s prison (Reclusorio Feminil) where close to 650 women reside. The center for prevention and re-adaptation (CPRF) is located within a compound of prisons.
The women’s prison was built to hold approximately 250 people, so it is highly overcrowded. The prison has women who are sentenced for all types of crimes from violent; to drug related; to white collar crimes such as fraud and money laundering. Women with mental health problems are here together with all kinds of other detainees as well as sentenced with unsentenced and guilty with innocent.
Because of the extremely long Mexican legal process, and bias toward condemnatory sentences, a lot of time passes before any final outcome is ever obtained in any case. It is a terrible burden on the individual which affects the health (mental, physical, and emotional) of the prisoner.
Rebecca Roth knows first hand about the fear, depression, anger, helplessness, hopelessness, and feeling of impotence being deprived of her freedom. She realized after the first year or so, that if she didn’t find a healthy way to funnel out all of the negative emotions (fear, depression, anger, helplessness, hopelessness), it would destroy her.
Then Rebecca began to take notice of the world around her. There are children in this prison born to mothers who were pregnant when arrested and the babies are born and allowed to live with their mothers during the first 3 years of their lives. When she lived in Dormitory C-3, there was a baby born, “Lupita," a darling little girl who had no toys whatsoever. An idea formed in Rebecca's head to make Lupita a doll. She made this doll which turned out to be the prototype of the "Original Friends" dolls They came up with the name “Original Friends” and thus was born this special collaboration. They began production in July, 2008 and sold their first doll to the director of the prison on September 16, 2008. Since that time, they have made and sold over 135 dolls, created completely from donated and recycled materials.now being made at the Reclusorio Feminil at Puente Grande.
The materials used include: fabric, ribbons, lace, buttons, paints, broken jewelry, odds and ends, seed pearls, and any other materials their imagination says can be used on a doll. Now there is a team of ladies working on the dolls. All funds received from the sale of the dolls goes toward their personal needs, improving their skills and their self-esteem.
All of the contributors are given a sense of purpose and improved self-esteem that comes from the philosophy of trying harder to make each step of the process the highest quality possible. With the money they earn from this project, the women are able to buy things in the prison store such as purified water, kotex, toilet paper, Clorox, clothing, handsoaps, etc. - or even an occasional treat at one of the three snack bars at Puente Grande.
